The Relic Radio Listener Community

I was poking around iTunes today and noticed a new podcast of "The Shadow." Someone had left a comment on that podcasts page remarking how hard it was to find episodes of The Shadow, or OTR podcasts that feature it. It is hard but there is a reason for that. It's still under copyright.

Along with Orson Welles' War Of The Worlds from Mercury Theatre, The Shadow has to be the best known old time radio out there. After poking around I found that Conde Naste Publications owns the copyright to The Shadow (remember that horrible Alec Baldwin movie?). What I'm not clear on is if the performance (radio show) is protected still or if it's just the script or both. Erring on the side of caution, I haven't played any episodes of The Shadow (they are out there though!).

I should look into this again. I do enjoy the Orson Welles era Shadow episodes and would love to include them into one of the podcasts.

Anybody have more info on this?

There's a Shadow podcast still putting up shows. Kind of nervy. I'd love to see a new Shadow movie. The 1994 film was fun, but didn't quite do it for me.

I wonder whose lawyers got archive.org to pull the shows down? Rami's or CondeNasts? What better way to get people interested in a movie than by listening to where it all began!

Thanks Jim! As for the Shadow, I dug around on the Internet for this, and found out that Sam Rami (the man behind SpiderMan) bought the rights to the Shadow (I guess from CondeNast) in prep for an upcoming movie.
However, there is no new news since late 2007. And, as for the delay in getting the shows off Archive, I still draw blanks.

Not anymore. They were all pulled down a few days ago. Though at last check there are still some Shadow podcasts on iTunes. For now anyway.

I might be a little late, but archive.org has a boatload of Shadow shows for free download.

HI smokki,

The problem isn't finding the actual episodes, it's the copyright issue. But after noticing a number of podcasts replaying these episodes without problems apparently, I will be including them in the new Orson Welles: On The Air podcast I just started a couple of weeks ago. You can find that at http://vintagemedia.net if you're interested!
